Positive signs amid the rain
The Economicals prove to be more than their name suggests despite moments of brilliance from OPFC
With the weather promising the game would be a very wet affair, a combination of the mighty OPFC 2s, 3s & Vets turned up to face the Economicals 2s away. Having suffered some unfortunate late dropouts two minor miracles occurred. Firstly the rain clearing away allowing some sunshine to break through the clouds. Secondly, we found ourselves in the unheard situation of more players turning up than was on the team sheet. This meant we got to start the game with a whopping 3 subs.
Pulling together a last minute front row of Crawsh, Morcombe & Si (new guy) we soon found we were competing in the scrums. Sure we lost a few and had a similar scenario with the lineouts, but we had a platform to work from. The opposition scored first to put us 7-0 down but for the majority of the first half we actually found ourselves camped in their half of the pitch. This culminated in a well earned score with Peter Griffin going over near the corner. A missed conversion put us at a well earned 7-5 down at the end of the first half.
Shortly after the 2nd half kick off the Economicals scored a couple of break away tries that put us on the back foot. Our defense continued to be top notch, however, following a number of substitutions, it was clear the intensity of the game was taking its toll. The game dynamics changed slightly when in a committed, albeit "not cool with the ref" attempt to clear the ball Coxy found himself with only his 2nd yellow card in 35 years of playing. Obviously this made things somewhat more challenging though ultimately got balanced out when one of their players received a yellow card for a dive.
The game ended 24-5 to the Economicals but the team did the club proud. The defense was phenomenal and really showed how everyone is switching on for this season.
As the tired but proud team left the ground the heavens opened up again with a heavy shower to book end the day.
