Surrey Combination 1 Merit League

Match Report by Maxi Preece

With the season coming to an end, the sun came out and shined over Fortress TD for this title deciding match. With the OPs gaining momentum since Christmas, and Sutton having an unfortunate run of injuries, it was set up to be a very close encounter, and the display did not disappoint.

The Sutton team were out and changed when I arrived at the ground, which is always concerning, but after a while, the OPs had all arrived with varying excuses for lateness, and we started to knuckle down and focus on the job in hand.

The kick off came, and we got stuck into it straight away, knowing that if we could get an early lead, our defence would hold us in a great position as it has done all season. We maintained possession very well, and camped out in the Sutton half. It didn’t take long for the pressure to reap rewards when Sutton infringed at the breakdown and Sam stepped up to slot the 3 points. After the restart, the recipe was the same, possession, territory, pressure, POINTS!!!

6-0 up after about 25 minutes, and we were exactly where we wanted to be, up on points and dominating both territory and possession. After numerous phases we managed to get a bit of an overlap on the right hand side, and I managed to get over the line in the corner in what must have looked like a very clumsy fashion!! It felt like a foot had gone into touch, and the touch judge concurred, but the referee bravely overruled the decision and awarded the try!! Sam stepped up and slotted the conversion over for a lead of 13-0. A couple of lapses in concentration, and Sutton started to come back into it, and their winger broke clear of the cover defence, and started to make his way up the line until Snide in a Tasmanian Devil-esque blur of arms and legs cam flying across the pitch and locked the proverbial door with an amazing cover tackle.

Half time came, and we went in 13-0 up, and feeling confident about the way we were playing. My final team chat was an emotional one, and I’m not ashamed to admit that there was a lump in my throat!! Finchy on the touchline took over the substitution decisions, as I knew I was not going to be able to make them!! The second half was much tighter than the first, and Sutton battled well, and we knew that any lapses in concentration would let them in for a score, and completely change the game. It did not take long for more pressure to lead to another penalty which Sam duly converted, to take the deficit to more than 2 converted tries.

With 13 minutes to go, Ben made a break, and it looked like a definite try scoring opportunity, when the Sutton winger brought him down with an outrageous trip. The referee was right on the spot and gave the yellow card accordingly. From here it was just a matter of running down the clock. With seconds remaining, we won a penalty and JC dispensed with the pleasantries and kicked the ball into touch and the final whistle blew and sealed a great win for the OP 3s.

Although it was a massive team effort, special mention must go to the forwards in this game, as we almost never took a backward step, dominated the lineout, and took a scrum against the head. It would be impossible to single anyone out for man of the match in such a great team effort, so I think it is only fair that I award it to myself for scoring the only try and it being my final game as captain of a great bunch of lads.

It has been a pleasure gents, and I for one cannot wait for next season already!! Bring on 2010/11

Maxi
