Match Report Sandown and Shanklin 1st XV 28 vs Old Pauline 1st XV 13

Saturday 28th November 2009

London South West Three

Match Report by Brandon Roberts

It was an early start for the 1st XV on Saturday as they took on the long trip to the Isle of White for their game with Sandown. The 9am meet time was an interesting experience and the squad were soon on their way to Portsmouth.

A major accident on the motorway was the only hold up and after a calm crossing we arrived at S & S in good time for the game.

Under a minute into the game OPs were 3 points down following a simple penalty for offside. From this point on for the next 20 mins it was all OPs.

All the good work was rewarded when from a lineout the S & S 10 looked less than interested in tackling Macca at full pace and in matador esque style got the hell out of the way and Macca was in close to the posts. 5-3. Unfortunately the conversion was missed in difficult kicking conditions.

The pack continued to carry with purpose and while the scrums were under a bit of pressure, the lineouts were almost flawless with Stu's throwing top darts all afternoon despite the blustery conditions. The backs looked dangerous with Si able to set Radders and the other outside backs into space.

The OPs were pressuring the S & S half backs which resulted in some basic errors. OPs were looking dangerous and their hosts somewhat rattled. Only the referees very premature whistle prevented OPs scoring another try which would have been a game changing moment and would have been just reward for the pressure OPs were exerting.

S & S finished the 1st half strongly and after a string of penalties were pressuring the OPs line. The defence close to the ruck held firm and Trigga was using the T Hammer to good effect smashing their main ball carrying 8 at every opportunity. The OPs defence was finally broken after a string of rucks on the OPs line. OPs competed fiercely and were very unlucky not to get a pressure releasing penalty for holding on. A show and go from the S & S 10 followed by a dubious grounding put the hosts back into the lead. The conversion followed and the rest of the half passed without much incident until Darcy decided to hug the S & S 10 after he had kicked the ball and was suitably told off and sent to have a rest for 10 mins. Tut tut Mr Darby. 100 lines and detention for you.

The 2nd half got underway and S & S started the brighter of the 2 teams. OPs came more into the game and a lineout deep in to S & S territory was mauled towards the line. The home captain took one for the team and joined from the side to prevent a certain try. While he got 10 mins for his trouble, OPs would undoubtedly have rather had the 5 points.

OPs eventually wore down the home defence after numerous phases including a perfect illustration of the ‘Buddy’ system – Who's your buddy Jack? Nils was put into space on the wing only to cut back inside wrong footing the defence to go over for a well taken try.

The game was in the balance, an innocuous kick down field from S & S resulted in a mix up and a slip at the back and almost unopposed S & S coasted in for a try against the run of play. This hit the confidence of the OPs who certainly didn’t deserve to be behind and S & S grew with confidence. The final 20 mins OPs defended valiantly although ultimately after a long period of pressure a drop goal and a try 10 minutes from time when down to 14 men for the 2nd time sunk the OPs.

A highlight of the 2nd half was the covering tackle from Micky who stopped what looked to all to be a sure-fire try for S & S in the corner.

Final score 28-13. Looks fairly one sided although had OPs been allowed to take their chances in the 1st half when they were dominant it could have been a very different score line.

Excellent hospitality from our hosts followed the game and then the marathon back to TD. A stop at a local convenience store prompted the start of much merriment. Our ‘drink responsibly liaison officer’ brought with him some trial products from work and we were all willing guinea pigs on the ferry. A lack of crushed ice and mixers meant we didn’t do the product justice but all 3 bottles were swiftly disposed of almost before we had left the IoW dock!

On the journey back we were kept well entertained by MC Jacky and some wonderful voices pumped tune after tune from their lungs. Chorister Wellings judged quietly from the rear and no doubt will be calling some members of the team to tap them up to join his new singing quartet. Trigga's rendition of No Limit may well have taken him out of the running but Radders and Si should keep their phones close in case…… yes Radders, keep their phone close.

Radders carelessness with his lovely new IPhone caused much amusement to the back seat of the bus and all who received the picture messages from Radders were suitably appalled.

Despite the result a great day out for OPs who should be proud of their performance. On another day it wouldn’t have been in vain.

Many thanks to our band of very loyal supporters who made the long journey. Your support was really appreciated.
