Old Paulines 4th XV 50 - Bec Old Boys 3rd XV 15

Merit League Combination 2
Match Report by Simon Mole
We welcomed Bec Old Boys to Thames Ditton on Saturday for what traditionally has been a high scoring encounter. News had filtered through the club during the week that props were shorter on the ground than tigers in the Indian jungle. A quick referral to the team sheet on Saturday confirmed the rumours as position 1-3 read “vacant”.
Therefore after little deliberation we decided to go for uncontested which normally leads to both team throwing the kitchen sink into rucks and mauls and forwards feeling fit as a fiddle.
The pack settled and welcomed three wingers into their fat fold (yes Andy you are a winger for the purpose of this report). Kick off commenced and a wild hack from Proudlock senior suggested it could be one of those days. However much to the surprise of everyone, OP’s marched up the pitch time and time again with great dexterity and skill.
Parker boshed and bullied his way through the midfield always supported by a screaming King, Proudlock Junior and Morecombe. The backs were clicking like a tight Chicago blues band and soon Messrs Britt, Wrighton and Evans were slicing through the Bec backline like a hot knife through Anchor. With Jackson pulling the strings in midfield, the tries flowed and scores were had for Parker x 2, Britt x 2, Tom Proudlock, Evsy and Dormandy. Evsy also added five extras. We went in at half time 43-0 to the good.
The second half read like the Dickens novel “A Tale of Two Halves” or something like that. Bec realised that although they were blunted in the scrums they could put their ten stone a man weight advantage to good effect and started mauling well and running with the ball.
To their credit OPs held out extremely well and big tackles by Godfrey on debut were outstanding. King also defended extremely well and made countless tackles. Unfortunately we were breached three times by a resurgent Bec. A late cameo by Carrsy led to a poachers try for the lad as he chased down Evsy's kick, shoved over the last meek defender and went in to dirty his otherwise clean jersey.
A job very well done and some great work by the backline. A chance to build on against top of the table, Dorking, next week.
Team – Dormandy, Godfrey, Britt, Jackson (Francis), Guliani (Carr), Wrighton, Evans, Parker, King, Proudlock, Morcombe, Baggott, Thompson, Mole, Proudlock
