Old Wimbledonians 1st XV 21 vs Old Pauline 1st XV 5
Saturday 7th November 2009
London South West Three
Match Report by Squire Radcliffe
On the Saturday morning, the old boys must have woken thinking they were going to enjoy a feast of rugby whilst wearing their smart (yet slightly askew) blazers, sipping some delectable ports and enjoying some scintillating debater as to whether the OPs could triumph a long with the Johnson’s England and the miserable Gatland’s Wales. Unfortunately a 2.30pm KO for Paulines put an abrupt halt to this merriment. So, OPs found themselves preparing for a match against a team that although sat below them in the table were back to full strength and out to prove a point.
ball was kept alive well. Wimbledonians had the early territory and soon had a penalty to show for the pressure, 3-0. More attacking open play followed with some good carries from Macca in the midfield and some good hands meant the match went from end to end. Soon enough OWs converted one of their opportunities with a good score off a line out, 8-0. Shortly after Ops were the creators of their own downfall as a pass that didn’t go to hand resulted in some scramble defence that couldn’t prevent another crossing for OWs, 13-0.
Things were not going well and required a response soon before the game was out of reach. OPs kept pressurising towards the end of the first half and turned down a couple of penalty opportunities as the pack looked dominant in the scrum and must have been close to a penalty try. However the decision not to kick for goal did eventually bring a try with Tom Bassett finishing well in the corner. A TMO may have been required for this but a solid decision by the referee. OWs added a penalty to make it 16-5 at half time.
The second half was fairly open again but neither side dominating for any great length of time and whilst OPs continually looked for space, it was the turnover rate that was proving to be our downfall. Ed Davenport made some excellent breaks but much like a grannies cleavage, there was no support and therefore nothing to show. As the game went on OPs continued to knock at the door but good defence and good performances from Wimbledonian’s back row meant that we were kept out. Eventually OWs caught OPs napping and went over for another score.
The game finished 21-5 to Old Wimbledonians and one to learn from for OPs, but at least the apostrophes are now sorted.
