Merit League Combination 2
Match Report by Simon Mole
OPs travelled to Cheam, home of Old Suttonians, following three absorbing encounters with league heavyweights, Cobham, Teddington and Esher. Injuries had taken their toll so the Vets were on hand to lend their considerable experience to a ‘well rotated’ 4s team.
Impeccable timing as always was the order of the day with Dormandy (14.47) and Glanville (14.59) the highlights of the pre-match entertainment. OPs changed and prepared with the novelty of having subs and, having run through some drills, were primed for battle.
Mole, who complained of a sore neck following an encounter with a Rhino the previous week, gave the armband to Benjamin and gave him plenty of advice in the old adage of “use the elements to your advantage as they might not be there second half”. Benjamin duly lost the toss and OPs played the first half into wind, sun and slope. However we played to a game plan of soaking up some early Sutts pressure and with the back row, especially King who caught the eye in the unfamiliar position of open side, putting Sutton under pressure, points were soon to follow in the shape of a well worked Matt Britt try who beat his man for pace, scoring in the corner.
OPs continued to dominate the half and Parker scored from a good burst through the middle with Michels adding the extras. Soon after, Jonesy succumbed to a suspicious blow to the head and was replaced by Mole. The front row were pressurising the Sutts scrum and were also putting in some decent yards around the park. Nick Smith added plenty pace and power and with both Benjamin and Glanville showing strength and a clean pair of heels up the park, we the visiting fan knew we were in for a treat. In fact such was the quality of Glanville’s break that he had time to sit down on the pitch and take stock before off loading to an onrushing King. The referee blew for half time and retired for a gin and tonic (true story).
The second half saw OPs push Sutts deep into their own half with a combination of Michels’ boot and some good phase work with the backline beginning to click with some good passing off the base of the scrums and rucks by Ali Wilson. Unfortunately Parker had to leave the field and was replaced by the evergreen Powell who packed down at blind side and looked generally confused at every scrum. However constant pressure and turnovers meant that Sutts began leaking penalties and were punished by Michels who added three penalties. Sutts further capitulated by losing players to yellow cards, one for persistent offending on the floor and one for just generally being too angry. Having stretched their lead OPs searched for tries and were rewarded when Britt ran on to a nicely weighted pass from King. This was soon followed by a try for Peck who supported following an excellent break by Jackson. Sutts scored a consolation try at the death but this did not take the gloss off a convincing performance by OPs.
Onwards and upwards from here.
