OPs 1st XV chalk up another win... |

Old Alleynians 1st XV 18 - Old Pauline Ist XV 23
Saturday 17th October 2009
London South West 3 League Game
With the respective league positions, this was always going to be an important match although there certainly wasn’t a sense of urgency from OPs before kick-off. This was clearly not the case as we set about the first 10 minutes with such cohesion and purpose that the former schoolboy rivals were not sure what had hit them!
From the kick off Old Paulines looked to attack. The pack providing an outstanding platform and the backs breaking the gain line to move their way rapidly up the 45º hill. Soon enough the overlap came and the skipper went under the posts unchallenged. Instead of holding back, OPs looked to do the same again and after receiving kick off again it wasn’t long until Macca broke in the midfield. A good pass and good support from Jon W meant it was a foot race to the line for which he just about won. Both tries converted and OPs found themselves 14-0 up.
Unfortunately, Old Alleynians weren’t about to take this lying down and with the massive slope in their favour, started to apply the pressure. Some over committed defence from the OPs and gaps appeared in the defence which were exploited through their main attacking threat of the right wing. Long story short, two tries in quick succession, led to 10-14.
Old Paulines had to shore up their defence and did so quickly. The game being in the balance, Sam L managed to slot a penalty to which they responded with their own and the half ended 13-17.
The second half did not quite harvest the attacking oppurtunities that the slope should have provided. Alleynians threw all they had at us for the first 20 minutes and it resulted in a third try for their winger making it 18-17 Sam backed up his flawless kicking by hitting another penalty to provide a small comfort zone.
With the score at 20-18, there were more than a few nerves jangling but nothing the faithful supporters aren’t used to and with their smart new blazers providing more than a distraction they seemed to handle the closing stages in a relaxed manner. As, thankfully, did the OPs. There was not the usual 15 minute sit-in on our own line, nor the panic in possession. Whilst the game remained close, there was a confidence and efficiency as to the way we set about closing it out with Clarke Snr. carrying well, Jack trying to control his aggression and the welcome return of Trigger in defence, so everyone knew their role.
With 10 or so minutes remaining, Sam (who is officially stolen from Maxi) slotted one more penalty to make sure they would need to score at least a try to take any points from the game and it finished 18-23.
The win keeps Old Paulines with the pack and with Andover visiting this Saturday, a good opportunity to push into the upper regions of the league.
