Old Pauline 7 v Kingston 3
Saturday 19th September 2009
London South West 3 League Game
Old Paulines played hosts to Kingston already in the knowledge that it would be Burger Man’s final game for a club he has served so loyally over the years. Having played a large part in last season’s promotion, it would have been wrong to leave on a loss but Kingston had no time to be sentimental.
The game got off to a reasonable start with both teams looking to play out wide but both unsuccessful. Kingston soon resorted to the strength of their pack and looked set to play the majority of the game up front. OPs were growing into the game with Big Bear Benson starting to run riot through their back line. A couple of ferocious hand offs from the light-lashing northerner led to some dominance in the back line and soon OPs looked like they had found their groove. That was until Benson was very unfortunate and suffered a hefty ankle break whilst striding towards the Kingston try-line. Not wanting to break northern stereotype he took it well without a whimper and will be a huge loss to OPs this season on and off the pitch.
The game continued but OPs had lost some direction and conceded a penalty which was well converted from distance to finish the half 3-0 down.
The second half saw OPs regroup and start well. After some good possession and a few half breaks, Chris Dinwiddy bowled past the full back from 10 metres out to touchdown for OPs one last time. (N.B. he claims he stepped his way to the line but this was after several pints and clearly a load of bollocks).
Having crossed Kingston’s line, the remaining 20 minutes or so was spent with Old Paulines backs to the wall and having to defend ferociously against rolling mauls, 5 metre scrums and a lot of pick and drives. Our pack had to work tirelessly but they stood strong and the combination of their epic effort plus some worthy tackling from Trigger kept the score at 7-3.
A scrappy win but some awesome defence saw Old Paulines claim their first victory of the season and a fitting send off for Chris ‘Burger Man’ Dinwiddy….which continued long into the night and if anyone has seen Macca’s jacket, phones or dignity he’d be grateful to hear from you.
