Old Paulines 26 v Farnham 9
Saturday 14th March 2009
Surrey 1 League Game
Match report by Squire
On a fine spring day, Old Pauline’s welcomed old rivals Farnham to Thames Ditton. Having been relegated with Pauline’s last year, there is always an additional slice of pride to play for. Farnham seemed depleted due to injuries as few, if any, of their youngsters were present. Most notably their scrum-half, to much of OP’s disappointment. No show and goes today the forwards grumbled while following Rods strict hydration rules. The warm up complete and the Thames Barrier deployed due to the amount drunk during the warm up OP’s took to the field.
OP’s were sloppy early doors conceding unnecessary penalties, making silly errors and wrong decisions. It gave Farnham a light grip on the game and let them settle. Although they were clearly stronger in the scrum, you felt if OP’s could keep it away from contact they should have the better of them. Farnham duly took the lead 3-0 after a period of pressure which woke up the OP’s team.
After much scrappy ball, OP’s got their act together with Duncan running an excellent line off Benson. Duncan passed to the left wing, who was in desperate need of support. Having managed to stay on his feet just long enough he looked over his shoulder to see a ghost!! Oh no it was just Random Roberts and his pasty legs (although he did seem to have his ar$e in his shorts for a change). The winger passed, reluctantly, to his flatmate who (in his own words after a lovely concoction courtesy of Big Bad Bob) “Ripped around the covering backs with a finish any winger would be proud of.” The try clearly proving the benefits of plenty of touch rugby on Wednesday nights!!! More importantly this try meant the 6 West Sheen Vale house had totalled 10 with it all square at 5 a piece (but still no girlfiend between them-Brandon excluded cos he's hot)….a competition more fierce than Ali vs. Frazier but also akin to the Chuckle Brothers!
A continually broken game with infringements at the breakdown did not necessarily make for excellent viewing for the large crowd. The referee soon lost his patience sending me behind the posts for 10 minutes to contemplate whether I should argue the point that if he didn’t see who was guilty of being offside can he therefore send off ‘the nearest man?’ Oddly I decided against arguing and he actually apologised upon my return if I was not the perpetrator of this heinous crime. Need I say, his hunch was right but still, maybe it is these new white boots I have recently been modelling? Maybe I just look guilty? Maybe the world is against me? Who knows!!!
OP’s were consistently troubling Farnham and this did not change with 14 men. Despite Farnham conceding several penalties in an effort to keep us out, Ed Davenport dodged, dipped, dived, ducked and dodged again his way to a try that Patches O’Houlihan would have been proud of leaving two defenders lying underneath the posts! We have told him about picking on people his own size!!! Morris duly converted.
I think we were 12-3 up at half-time but with not one person out of breath, Rod was not very subtle in his summary. The take home message being, put some points on the board and finish the game off. More water was taken on board and a hose pipe ban instantly called for by Thames Water.
During the second half, despite some excellent breaks there was still something missing. The pack were having to work hard, but the backs were slightly misfiring and seemed reluctant to take some golden opportunities. The pack decided to reward themselves by ploughing over the line in the latter stages of the second half, with Rayner arising from the pile of bodies as the try scorer. Although he did let himself, his schooling and his vastly more talented brother down by attempting an American Football style spike!! An impressive effort despite this as they were certainly an experienced opposition!
A final score of 26-9 in a game, which was not our most glamorous but at least the old boys didn’t have to go through the usual nail-biting finish and went home with a good deal of gravy and red wine down their ties.
28th March is the big game against Bec Old Boys and it’s only in Earlsfield/Wandsworth so all support will be hugely welcome!! Get down their, support us, have a few bevies and then head out for some pub golf!! It's some lovable winger's birthday and you can watch him fail with the ladies.
